Have you ever sat in your car in the driveway, engine off, phone buzzing, and for five whole minutes you could not make yourself walk through that door? Because you knew the moment you did, everyone would need something from you.
If that is you, read this slowly. This one is for the woman who holds it all together.
There are two versions of you living in the same body right now. One keeps proving, performing, and pushing, because she is terrified that if she stops, everything falls apart, and maybe she does too. The other one is quieter. You can barely hear her over the noise. She just wants peace. She wants to wake up without dread. She wants to sit down without guilt. She wants to exist without justifying her presence with productivity.
Here is the trap. The conflict was never between those two women. The conflict is that you were taught to call the first one strong and the second one weak.
The world calls you strong. The world never asks if you are tired.
Staying in that proving place is not free. It costs your nervous system. It costs your sleep. It costs your ability to be present with the people you love, because your mind is always somewhere else, always solving, always planning the next thing before you finished the last.
It shows up as exhaustion you cannot explain. Anxiety humming under everything. Brain fog that makes you lose your words mid sentence. Nights staring at the ceiling, running the list of what you did not finish. We have normalized all of it. We called it ambition. We called it being a boss. We called it being a strong woman.
Somewhere along the way we started mistaking survival for success. We look at a woman barely holding it together and we celebrate her hustle. We never stop to ask if she is okay. We never stop to ask ourselves.
The shift does not start with a new planner or a better morning routine. It starts with a question.
Not, "How do I fit more into my day?"
But, "Why do I believe I have to carry all of this by myself?"
The first question assumes your problem is time management. The second one tells the truth. You believe you are supposed to carry it all. You believe asking for help is failure. You believe rest is something you have to earn.
Choosing peace over proving is not about luxury, and it is not about escaping responsibility. It is an internal decision before it is anything you can see from the outside. It is deciding your nervous system deserves peace. That your body is not a machine. That rest is not a reward you collect after burnout, it is a requirement for you to function.
How many times have you said, "I will rest when I finish this project," or "I will slow down after this season"? And the season never ends. The project becomes the next project. Rest keeps getting pushed to a finally that never comes. Because finally was never about the list. It was about worthiness. You did not believe you deserved rest until you produced enough to justify it.
But rest is not a paycheck. You do not earn it. You need it.
First, stop auditioning for love. So many of our relationships feel like a performance. We show up as the helpful one, the available one, the one who never has needs. A woman who has decided her peace matters does not audition. She lets people see her tired. She asks for help without apologizing three times first. She says no without writing a ten page explanation. The people who love you for real do not need you to earn it.
Second, joy is productive. I know that sounds like a contradiction. We were taught productivity looks like spreadsheets and crossed off tasks. But when you laugh without checking your phone, when you take a walk without a podcast about becoming better, when you eat without thinking about what you should have eaten instead, you are producing something your soul has been starving for.
Third, healing is not a straight line. Some days you set beautiful boundaries and you are proud of yourself. Other days you overcommit and say yes when you meant no. The difference is that you notice sooner. You catch yourself. And instead of shame, you give yourself grace. You do not have to have it all figured out today.
Here is the principle I need you to hold. Your worth was never something you had to prove. It was something you were born with, and the world trained you to forget.
So do one thing today. Not next month. Today. Say no to one thing that drains you, and do not explain it for ten minutes. Take a walk without your phone and do not call it unproductive. Ask for help with one thing you have been carrying alone. Book the appointment. Tell one person what you actually need. Let yourself rest, and when the guilt shows up, and it will, let it sit there without answering it.
You do not have to break before you give yourself permission to heal. You do not have to earn the rest your body is begging for. And when you choose peace over proving, you give every woman watching you permission to do the same. Healing is contagious. So is burnout. Choose what you want to spread.
If you are ready to stop carrying it all alone, come join us inside the Wake Up Happy, Sis! community. It is a space for women releasing the pressure of being everything for everyone. You do not have to perform there. You just have to show up.
I release the need to prove my worth. My existence is enough.
Your soft life does not begin when life gets easier. It begins the moment you decide your peace matters too.

Hey Boo Hey! I'm the CEO and Founder of Dolce & Lay. I have been a self-care enthusiast and a student of the wellness arts for over 15 years. Having been in the space of being overwhelmed with motherhood, family, work, school, community service, and all the other hats that I wore, I constantly put myself LAST. My health and my relationships suffered until I decided to take charge of my self-care and wellness FIRST, so I could be more present for all who needed me. Now my passion is helping African American women - professionals, entrepreneurs, and mom+ (the women who wear all the hats) reconnect with themselves through
Radical Self-Care!
Just what is Radical Self-Care? It's being authentic, intentional, and unapologetic about putting your self-care first. It's removing the guilt and promising yourself to #ReclaimYourMeTime so you are the best version of yourself for those who need you. It's thinking differently about self-care, Wellness, and your own self-discovery. It's building with a community of women who support one another along their journeys.
